Song of Solomon Chapter 8
“Till Death Do Us Part!”
This last chapter gives a picture of, now, a married couple and mentions more than once the idea of a love that lasts forever, “till death do us part.”
1. The bride wants to give her lover spiced wine which is what a bride and bridegroom would share together on their wedding day as a symbol of bearing together the comforts and adversities of life. As in any relationship, there will always be times of joy and times of adversity. May we remember our commitment to one another to share our love “for better and for worse.”
2. She even wants him to set a seal upon his heart declaring the permanence of their lives in marriage, till death do us part.
3.. Lastly, she speaks of “jealousy.” Probably meaning that may their love for one another be so strong that it is never broken by an outsider or “competitor.”
Married Couples: What are the joys of your marriage? What can you do to build upon such joys? What are the challenges of your marriage? What are you willing to do to address such challenges?
We know God hates divorce. But he’s not content with miserable marriages. He doesn’t want our thought process to always be the thought of divorce when things aren’t going well. But rather, what can I do to make this a stronger, Christ-centered, relationship? And if you get to the point where you feel there’s nothing the two of you can do to bring reconciliation, may I emphasize again the value of seeking outside help. One should never feel embarrassed by this. Actually, I respect a person who’s willing to do whatever possible to bring life back into their marriage. God can do that. God can take a marriage that’s going nowhere and bring life and love back into it.
Un-Married Couples: As you move forward, know your desired mate. If problems exist before marriage, don’t assume they go away just because you are getting married. If you aren’t able to work through differences before marriage, then what a huge challenge you’ll face when you are married.
Ephesians chapter 5 is a great chapter to read in regards to the responsibilities of a husband and wife in marriage, and the power that love and sacrifice can have on a marriage. Read it! Blessings!
