Read John 6:25-42
What Is It That You Offer That I Can’t Get From This World?
The crowd of Jews struggled because they couldn’t get their minds off of what this world had to offer. They could only see the physical food that they benefited from. They couldn’t see the spiritual food that Jesus was trying to give them for eternal life.
The crowd looked for Jesus not because of his miracles which gave evidence of his authority from God. They looked for him because they loved the fact that they could eat food like the Jews did with Moses.
Jesus kept pushing them towards the food that gives eternal life. Jesus declared that his Father God had given them true bread from heaven. They were still fixated on physical food and not spiritual food. Jesus answered them, “I am the bread of life.. I have come down from heaven.. my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him will have eternal life.”
The crowd could not accept these words because he said he came down from heaven. In their eyes, he was the son of Joseph and Mary, so how could he come down from heaven? They just couldn’t see that Jesus was the Son of God. Their minds were stuck in the things of the world.
The devil loves to get us fixated worldly things and off of what God has to offer us. The devil wants you to live and be consumed with the here and now: our jobs, relationships, money, power, to be the smartest, the fastest, the prettiest, etc. He wants us consumed with the things of this world as our number one priority. The more we focus on what this world has to offer, the less time we invest in the Lord.
What is it in this world that has you captivated. What are you consumed with? You worry and fret and in the meantime your soul is dying for lack of food and drink from the Father. Surrender all that this world has to offer over to the Lord and let him produce in you that which has eternal value. Jesus offers eternal life. You can’t get that from the world!
