Read Zephaniah Chapter 1
What Are You Still Holding On To?
God declares his coming Wrath against all of Jerusalem and Judah. All the remnants or signs of false gods will be cut off. Even the smallest remnant will be removed. This coming punishment is described as God’s wrath, trouble, destruction, desolation, darkness, gloom, and distress. Why? Because the people have sinned against the Lord. Nothing, including the money they so much depend upon, will be able to stop the punishment of God.
Vs 5-6 states that some of the people proclaimed the name of the Lord, yet they were dabbling in other gods as well. God came to destroy every remnant, meaning even the smallest piece or hint of false gods in their lives. It just seemed Judah couldn’t let go of every false god because they were attracted to some of the things of the world.
It sounds like our world today amongst Christians. I’m convicted! My mind wanders into an arena where my heart and mind shouldn’t go. God forgive me! People may look at me and call me a godly man yet in my mind thoughts come that are not godly or holy. Forgive Me Lord. I don’t want any remnant or small piece of ungodliness in my life. I want to stand holy before God and others. I don’t want a deceptive life that fools those around me, yet never fools God.
What’s that one or two things in your spiritual walk that you haven’t let go of yet? You keep going back to it in your mind and heart? You proclaim Your allegiance to God but something or someone else is consuming you. You say you can’t let it go. Your flesh keeps going back to it.
Pray God helps you let it go. Pray God shows you the person you can share this with that will be your accountability partner so you can walk in holiness. God empower us so we let go of even the tiniest remnant of that which stands between us and you. May we let it go before it DESTROYS us or before we experience your justified punishment.
