Read Zechariah Chapter 5
Ouch! That Hurt!
Have you ever read the Bible and came upon a topic that convicted you of a sin you were committing? Or perhaps, went to church and heard the pastor talking about something you yourself were doing and it convicted you? When you left, you felt pierced by the Holy Spirit and it hurt because it convicted you of sin?
In this chapter, Zechariah sees a flying Scroll and the angel tells him that it’s a curse that is going out over all the people. It will remove all those who steal and who live their lives for someone or something other than the Living God. The scroll must be the word of God because it’s God’s word that purges us. That cleanses us. That gets rid of Filth and sin in our lives. Think about these Scriptures:
Hebrews 4:12-13a
“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates even dividing Soul and Spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and attitude of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.”
When we are living in sin, the word of God will pierce our hearts. It will hurt. The intent is to draw us into a life of repentance and back into a holy life with God.
If God was to send a flying scroll that followed us wherever we went, would we be convicted of sin? Are there things we’d be ashamed of that we are doing? Have we conformed ourselves to the pattern of this world? Has the word of God, his truth, become fairy tale stories in our lives?
1 Thessalonians 1:5-6a says:
“Because our Gospel came to you not simply with words [not a fairy tale] but also with power, with the Holy spirit, and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake and you became imitators of us and of the Lord.”
Dear Lord, in those areas the Word of God pierces us, and hurts, cleanse us of our sins and help us to repent so that we become imitators of godly people and imitators of you. Amen!
