Read Matthew Chapter 7:24-29
Are You Wise Or Are You A Fool?
After hearing all that Jesus said in chapters 5 through 7, he concludes with these words:
“Therefore, whoever hears my words and acts upon them is like a wise man who built his house upon the rock.” Even though the rains come down and the floods come up, and the winds blow and burst against the house, the house doesn’t fall because it is built upon the rock.
But those who hear the words of Jesus and don’t act upon them are like the foolish person who built their house upon the sand. The rains and floods come, the winds blow and burst against the house and the house falls.
The difference between the wise person and the foolish person is that even though both heard the Words of Jesus, only one put into practice what they heard. How much we know about the Bible is not what impresses God. Luke 8:21 Jesus said we become a part of his family when we put into practice what we hear. We make it every bit a part of our lives. God’s word is the rock that we stand on to get through all the struggles and trials of life.
Whatever the struggles and disappointments are in life (loss of jobs, loss of house or car, the death of a family or loved one, a lack of food on the table, rejection from your peers, etc.), Jesus wants to keep us afloat and standing strong. Jesus, give us faith and perseverance even through the roughest times of life as a testimony of our faith and a testimony of your faithfulness to us even in the most difficult days.
In verse 28 and 29, it says the multitudes were so amazed at Jesus’s teachings because he spoke as one having authority, unlike the Scribes. The Scribes knew God’s word but they lacked passion and obedience. It’s hard to speak with authority when your life is not impacted by God’s word.
I want to be like Jesus and not the scribes. I don’t want to be just another Christian that knows God’s word but my life is not impacted by the word nor are other lives impacted by my life. I want my life to count for something. I want to be obedient. I want to be used by God so I know his word and I put them into practice and do so with authority because I’m empowered by the Holy Spirit. Lord, I make this my prayer.
