Read Matthew Chapter 26:26-28
Do You Remember?
Jesus is eating bread and wine with the disciples. He first takes the bread, breaks it, then gives it to his disciples and says, “Take, eat, this is my body!”
When we take communion at church, we eat bread as a way of remembering what Christ did for us. His body was broken for us. His body was beaten with hands, slaps, punches, rods, crown of thorns, and a whip with sharp objects at the end. His body was truly broken for us.
Isaiah the prophet prophesied this about Jesus in Isaiah 52:14 NIV:
[14] … his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness— … ”
I fell from a tree 20 plus feet and as I headed to the ground a branch hit me in the face. My face swelled up on one side so bad I couldn’t see out of my one eye. Now imagine all the beatings that Jesus went through over and over again. You can begin to understand how he was unrecognizable. Jesus took our beating for our sins upon himself.
Jesus then took the cup of wine and gave it to his disciples and said, “Drink it” for it represents his blood “which was poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.” Jesus willingly shed his blood so that our sins could be forgiven and we could be united into a relationship with him for eternity.
We are told to remember what Jesus did when we take communion: the eating of the bread and the drink of the cup.
When we take communion, do we REMEMBER what Jesus did for us?
Do you REMEMBER with your HEART or with your MIND? When I remember with my mind, I think, “Oh yeah, this is nice.” I’m thankful, but it ends there. I then carry on with daily routine not REALLY remembering what he did.
When I REMEMBER with my HEART, I’m broken. I feel unworthy. I’m humbled before God. I’m so appreciative that it draws me and motivates me to want to serve God with all my heart. I want others to experience it also.
When you take communion, remember what Jesus did for you with your heart and not just your mind. Have a blessed day!
