Read Matthew Chapter 19:27-30
I Want To Be First!
After Jesus finishes talking about the need to give up everything that hinders our relationship with him, Peter speaks out saying, “Behold, [which means, ‘Pay close attention to us because’] we have left everything and followed you; what then will there be for us?”
I sensed a little arrogance and self-righteousness in Peter’s heart. As if to be saying, “Hey everybody, look at how great we have been to leave everything for the Lord. I sure hope we get a great reward.”
Jesus acknowledges that they have left everything for him. It’s true! Jesus tells them they will have the honor, on Judgment Day, to sit on the 12 thrones and play a part in judging the 12 tribes of Israel. Not only that but for everyone who leaves any family member, or job, or a place of security, for Christ, will get a great reward along with inheriting eternal life.
If God calls us someplace, and we respond in obedience, then great is our reward because God sees that our heart is in the right place. It’s not easy making tough decisions for the Lord, but if our heart is in the right place, then we can do so with excitement and joy.
Jesus ends with this comment: “But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first.” Perhaps we should think of this for a second. Why would the first be last and the last first? Humility comes to my mind.
Those who live in humility:
1. Recognize their imperfections and their need for the Lord. They realize that apart from Christ they can do nothing.
2. Because of their humility, they’ll be more apt to want to serve others rather than be served.
Humility definitely captures the heart of God.
I almost gathered from Peter’s comment earlier that he almost felt entitled to be first.
I pray that we don’t allow our hearts to lose the HUMILITY Factor and the desire to SERVE rather than be served. I feel it’s then we will be taken to the forefront rather than be taken to the rear. Do you want to be first? Then keep humility in the forefront and be one who would prefer to serve others rather than be served.
