Read Matthew 6:16-24.
Is It Too Late?
Jesus addresses Fasting in the same way he did our Giving and Praying. And that is, fasting is not supposed to be an opportunity to impress people but it’s something done between you and God. It’s an opportunity to take the time you usually would eat and use it as a time to meet with the Lord in prayer and worship, and to bring to God your concerns. It is not to be used as an opportunity to let others see how SPIRITUAL you are because you fast for 2 weeks. People may be impressed by how many days you fast but God does not reward those based on how much we impress others, but on one’s heart when we fast. Make it all about God and your concern.
Jesus gives the directive don’t lay up treasures for yourself upon Earth that can be destroyed or stolen. Instead, he says, lay up treasures in Heaven where neither moth can destroy nor a thief can steal. Again, this is between you and the Lord. You might be able to fool me on where your heart really is because of how much you serve in the church. Perhaps I could even fool you because I’m a pastor. But God doesn’t look at our titles, he looks at our heart. He knows what is really important to us. The thing that’s really important is what captivates our time. It could be money. It could be a relationship. It could be the stupidest things that captivate our heart and our energy and our time.
Sports definitely consumes our families today. There are kids out for two or three sports at a time. Our society teaches our kids today that sports are the most important thing in the world. If one is gifted in sports then use the gift for God’s glory but don’t make it so important that one’s spiritual life dies or becomes compromised.
What consumes your time and energy? Is your faith where God wants it to be? Is your commitment where God wants it to be? Has the Church become less important because of the other “important” activities? Has your Bible time diminished because you are “so busy?” Does your family see you promoting Christ or promoting something else? If changes need to be made in your life, make it today.
Don’t wait till it’s too late. Sometimes TOO LATE is when we are so DECEIVED in our thinking that we DON’T SEE the need to CHANGE.
