Commit Adultery? I Would Never Do That.
Jesus addresses the issue of adultery. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery…'” let’s stop here for a second, we all know how bad and serious this is. I’m sure we all know someone who has fallen in this area. For those who have not committed adultery, probably PAT themselves on the back and say, “I would never do that!” And at the same time feel a little self-righteous. Why wouldn’t they do it? Because commiting adultery is a serious offense in the eyes of God!
But wait a minute! Before we get too self-righteous, let’s read the rest of what Jesus said. “But everyone who looks on a woman to lust for her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.” WOW! That means I’m guilty! But what’s the big deal, everyone lusts? Jesus must think it is pretty serious because he also said, “If your right eye makes you stumble, then tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for one of the parts of your body to perish now, then for the whole body to be thrown into hell.”
Yes, but the consequences are not as great when you lust in your mind versus actually following through with it. Okay, true. From an earthly standpoint, the consequences are greater, but from a spiritual standpoint, Jesus stated that both lust and the act of adultery are worthy of being thrown into hell. That’s Pretty Serious! Jesus wants us to see how serious both acts are! When he said tear out your eye when it sees and lusts, he’s not being literal. It’s his way of making a point of how serious of an offence lusting really is. We make light of it but it’s A SERIOUS OFFENSE!!!!!!
Do something now about lusting before it destroys your relationship with another. Get rid of porn from all your social media. Train yourself to turn quickly from it as a way of fleeing from it.
Dear Lord, help me see how serious lusting is so that I don’t look at a woman with lust. Amen!
