Read Matthew 5:13-16
Disciples of Jesus are Salt and Light.
Jesus makes two comments about what true disciples are to be:
1. Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth.” When we understand what salt is, we understand how responsible we must be as followers of Christ. Salt is:
– a preservative
– a seasoning to add flavor to food
– a disinfectant and – a unit of money.
Being salt is not an easy task and can only be done with the help of the Holy Spirit. We must preserve the TRUTH of the Bible in how we live. We may be the only Bible people see so let’s live it in Truth. This means our lives should reflect love and encouragement to others. Not condemnation. When we are around others, we should be like seasoning that adds good flavor to food. People should feel good to have us around because of the love that we show and encouragement we give.
As Christians, once we lose the saltiness of love and encouragement, and Truth, we become NO GOOD – WORTHLESS.
2. Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.” What a compliment this is if we really lived as a light to those around us. What does light do?
– it gives a sense of security.
– it takes away fear.
– it shows the way to go.
– it gives hope.
Our neighbor, who is not a Christian, knew this Christian lady who passed away. She shared how she was impacted by this lady on earth saying, “When I was around this Christian lady, I felt inspired.”
I thought, that’s how it should be. We should be a light of Truth that inspires people to want to know the Lord, and want to be the best that they can be for the Lord.
Our lives as followers of Christ should be a light to our dark world. When we are around others, our lives should act as a guide to the truth of Jesus. In reality, people should be convicted of sin. Not because we are condemning them of sin, but because the Holy Spirit uses our life of truth, love and encouragement to convict others.
When I worked at The LumberYard, my friend Roy pulled me aside one day and said that when he’s around me he feels guilty. He said that he felt God was convicting him of sin and he was afraid of what would happen to him if he died.
I never said a word to him about his life and how he was living. But God used me as a light in a dark world that needed Jesus.
We should all be a light that gives hope to others for salvation.
Be SALT and Be LIGHT in our world. Preserve God’s TRUTH. Love others towards the TRUTH. Encourage others towards TRUTH.
