Read Matthew 5:1-4
The Poor In Spirit And Those Who Mourn.
Matthew 4:25 says a great multitude came from several regions following Jesus. When he saw them, he went on the mountain and sat and his disciples came to him. So is Jesus speaking to just his 12 disciples or to a multitude of people. I believe he’s speaking to the multitude. His disciples are there, whether it be his 12 disciples or some of his regular followers. But ultimately the multitude is hearing his words as mentioned in Matthew 7:28. Versus three through eight mentions nine beatitudes. The first one says “Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” The poor in spirit speaks of those who recognize their spiritual helplessness. They are spiritually bankrupt, recognizing themselves as a sinner and in need of help. They realize their need for a savior and want it. This heart is attractive to God and He is excited to bring Salvation to their soul. Such ones are promised the kingdom of heaven. This is the Hope of those who are broken in spirit. The arrogant ones will die in their sin.
The next beatitude says, “Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted.” The Greek word for mourn denotes the strongest type of mourning as it relates to a death. I feel this is related to both a physical or spiritual death.
Have you ever mourned for the death of a loved one at a funeral? God promises comfort. Have you ever mourned over the spiritual death of another, as Jesus did in Luke 19:41? Have you ever mourned over your own spiritual well-being? I wept in bed when I realized my spiritual life was not alive in Christ. I felt I was failing spiritually. It’s what brought me to my knees in repentance recognizing my need for 100% surrender to Jesus. I desired to be filled with his Holy Spirit so that I could live with him in holiness. God promises comfort to those mourning. Keep seeking the one who gives the comfort versus trying to be comforted by that which is temporary. Don’t be deceived into thinking you are not worthy of God’s salvation and comfort. Daily give your heart to the Lord, 100%, and be blessed by him!
