Read Matthew 27:6-10
One Good Deed Doesn’t Cover Up A World Of Sin.
The chief priest and the elders have been continually scheming together on how to put Jesus to death.
1. They first paid money to Judas so they could capture him.
2. They arrested Jesus with an army of people.
3. They bound him like a criminal and took him before Ciaphas, the Chief Priest.
4. They beat up on him and mocked him.
5. Then when Judas gave them back the money out of remorse for betraying the “innocent blood” of Jesus, they basically responded “So What!” The religious leaders could care less about Judas’s spiritual well-being. Even as he poured his heart out to them, they didn’t care. Why? Because Judas was a mere pawn whom they could use in order to reach their ultimate goal of having Jesus killed.
After doing all of these evil things, the chief priests and elders took the money Judas gave back and said, “The law says we can’t put this money in the Temple Treasury because it was used to betray innocent blood.” To do that would be wrong. So instead they used it to buy The Potter’s Field as a nice gesture to help strangers have a burial place. Aww! Isn’t that sweet? But wait a minute, that one nice gesture doesn’t cover up the sin they have just committed before and against our Lord! The only thing that covers up sin is a heart of repentance and the blood of Jesus. What can wash away our sins, nothing but the blood of Jesus!
Are we struggling with sin, but on Sunday we look wonderful, we pray wonderfully, we put money in the offering plate, and we compliment the elderly, but we’re doing nothing about the sin we do behind the church’s back?
Someone just came to me the other day and said, I’m struggling in this area of my life and I’ve hid it out of shame. Would you be my accountability partner. I’m tired of living this secret sin.
May we all have the guts to be proactive in putting sin behind us. But may we recognize the power of the blood of Jesus to cover and forgive every sin. Turn to Christ, but don’t be afraid to turn to the church for help if need be.
