Read Matthew 27:45-46. Why, God, During My Darkest Time, Do I Feel Forsaken?
Jesus was on the cross and from noon to 3:00 p.m., darkness fell upon all the land. About 3:00 p.m., Jesus cried out with a loud voice saying, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” This is a quote from Psalms 22. As we read Psalms 22 we see that what is written is actually a prophecy of what is to happen with the Messiah. We see much of its fulfillment during Jesus’s crucifixion. Psalms 22 starts off with “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are you so far from saving me, so far from My cries of anguish? My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest.”
Some say, that God had turned his back on Jesus because he was carrying the sins of the world on himself. God could not be in the presence of sin so he turned away from Jesus. Is that why? Or at Jesus’s darkest moment did he just “feel” forsaken like we often feel at our darkest moments? Psalms 22 goes on to say that “God has not hidden his face from the suffering one but has listened to his cry for help.” As you read on you see it has a ” Happy Ending” as it speaks of the coming day when people will “bow before him who rules over the Nations.”
Jesus, had taken on the sins of the world. He suffered deeply and when He was close to death, darkness came over all the land. He felt forsaken by God but the good news is forthcoming, when “all people will one day recognize him as Lord and will bow before him and proclaim his righteousness.”
Jesus’s darkest moment was when He was on the cross. What is your darkest moment? Have you ever felt forsaken by God; feeling all alone as you continually cry out to Him, day and night? God does hear your voice and at the right time he will deliver you. He’s never too early and never too late. Are you getting impatient? Keep persevering! God’s not done accomplishing what he wants to accomplish in and through your life. Focus not on the darkness, but rather focus on the light of hope that is forthcoming.
