Part 1 – Is Jesus Your Lord Or Is He Just Your Teacher?
While Jesus and the disciples were eating Passover together, Jesus said, emphatically, “Truly I say to you that one of you will betray me.” Can you imagine such a statement that comes out of the mouth of Jesus while referring that one of his disciples who have followed him for 3 years would indeed betray him!? It says the disciples were “grieved.” I’m sure they all stopped eating out of grief while looking at each other and then looking at Jesus while asking the question, “Surely it is not I, Lord?” They were struck with grief and turmoil.
What I find interesting, while everybody else is grieved and frantically trying to figure out who’s going to betray Jesus, Judas is quietly continuing on with his meal while showing no grief and acting like he’s innocent. He’s trying not to draw attention to himself as he dips his food into the bowl with Jesus, as he continues to eat. Jesus then reveals that Judas is the guilty one who will betray him. Judas responds by saying, “Surely it’s not i, Rabbi?” Rather than calling him “Lord,” like the other disciples did, he calls him “Rabbi” meaning “teacher.” Judas couldn’t bring himself to call Jesus Lord without feeling guilty. His response shows the chasm that occurred between his Heart and the Heart of Jesus. It revealed his hypocrisy.
In our world today, there are many who deny Jesus as the Son of God, who died and rose again from the dead. They deny him as Lord, but they are willing to say, “He was a good teacher!” Who is Jesus to you? Is he the “Lord” of your life or is he just a “good teacher? Think about that?
