Why Make This A Big Deal?
The Feast of the Unleavened Bread and Passover were both celebrated by the Israelites in remembrance of God liberating them from slavery in Egypt. On the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread, the Israelites held a holy assembly, refrained from work, and began to eat only unleavened bread for 7 days; thus commemorating their hasty departure from Egypt when they didn’t have time to let bread rise with yeast.
In their preparations the disciples came to Jesus asking, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?”
Jesus responded, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is at hand; I am to eat the Passover at your house with my disciples.”‘” And the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.
It’s amazing because the Israelites made a big deal out of this celebration. What’s the big deal? To understand the account of the Israelites being delivered from Egypt into the Promised Land, is to have a foretaste of Jesus’s coming to Earth and providing forgiveness of sins, thus delivering us from slavery in sin to the forthcoming promised land in heaven. Listen, that’s a big deal. I mean it’s a really BIG DEAL! SIt in your recliner and ponder that thought. Without the work of Christ we are destined to hell because of our sin – For Eternity. But God’s love was demonstrated when he sent his Son Jesus to take our punishment and die in our place; and Jesus, out of love for us, joyfully obeyed his father’s wish. Jesus took on our punishment. If we put our faith and trust in the work of Christ, our sins are forgiven, and we have:
1. A new life in Christ where we can learn to walk in holiness, and
2. We have the promised land of Heaven to look forward to.
This is the greatest decision we could ever make in our life. Earth is our temporary home and how we choose to live our life, with or without Christ, determines where we spend eternity: Heaven or Hell! Have we given our life completely to Jesus? Or are we still stuck in Egypt being held in slavery by our sin? Jesus loves you and wants to set you free! That’s A BIG DEAL!
