Wake Up You Brood Of Vipers!
8th and Last WOE: Jesus says, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the monuments of the righteous.” The scribes and Pharisees highly respected the prophets before them who were killed for prophesying against the evil of their days. Yet their hearts were no different, and they went as far as to say, “If we had been living in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partners with them in shedding the blood of all the prophets.” What a joke! It would be like us saying, “If we would have been alive during the days of Jesus, we would not have denied him like the disciples did.” Really? Be careful what you say lest God reveal your sin as he did the scribes and Pharisees. Can we say with great confidence, as Paul did, “For I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation.”?
Jesus said to the scribes and Pharisees that “you bear witness against yourself that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.” In essence, Jesus is saying you are no different than those who were murderers before them.
Jesus prophesies to them by saying, “I’m sending you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from City to City… ” This very prophecy would be fulfilled against the disciples and followers of Christ of the present generation.
As a result, Jesus said that upon the scribes and Pharisees will fall all the guilt of all those who were murdered since time began because they are no different. Jesus goes as far as to call them ” brood of vipers ” and declares they will “not escape the sentence of hell.” Ouch, that had to hurt!
