Read Matthew 23:25-26
Dang!! You Look GOOD!!!!!
6th WOE: Jesus says, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence.”
Jesus says that the Pharisees put a lot of emphasis on being clean on the outside – their appearance. The Greek word for CLEAN is KATHARID which means they went to “Great extent to make sure they looked good.” But on the inside they are evil. Jesus says they are full of ROBBERY. The Greek word for robbery is HARPAGAY which means “to pillage or take with great force.”
Jesus calls them BLIND because they need to focus first on the inside of their lives: Their souls! Their faith walk! They need to focus on being all God is calling them to be and to do so with as much intensity as they put forth in trying to look good on the outside.
Think about it! We Americans spend a lot of money to get the right shoes to match every name brand outfit we have. Everything has to look perfect before we leave the house. We make sure we have a good clean shave and all the right makeup on. We have the best cologne or perfume. We take one last look in the mirror before we go out the door. Don’t get me wrong, we all should take pride in how we look on the outside, but imagine if we put as much effort in our faith walk as we do our outer appearance.
Imagine us making sure we don’t just read God’s word, but we study it. We meditate over it. We memorize Scripture. We pray in Brokenness and Humility because we want people to see Jesus in us versus a person who’s all about being self-indulgent. Before we go out the door we take one last look at our hearts and attitude and pray, “God, use me to impact a life today for Your Glory and not My Glory.”
What I find is that when we do that, then I feel it won’t be our nice clothes that first capture the attention of others, but rather our HUMBLE and SERVANT’S HEART. So when people say, “Dang, you look GOOD.” They are really talking about your heart.
