Read Matthew 23:1-12. Part 3
The Greatest Is The One Who Serves.
We’ve looked at this passage three times now. The scribes and the Pharisees have shown themselves to be arrogant and attention seekers. They love to receive from others, and expect it. Being friends with someone like that would be difficult. I don’t know how much of it I could take because I’m “expected to give, give, and give in the relationship.” A relationship that melts my heart, that’s attractive, and even drives me to want to be a person who gives, is a relationship where somebody makes me feel significant and loved.
In Vs 11, Jesus said, “The greatest among you shall be your servant.”
I’m drawn to those who understand the value of humbling oneself, and having the attitude that says, I want to serve others. I want to love others. I want to help others. I want to encourage others. I want to be kind to others.
Who wouldn’t want to be around someone like that. And I don’t mean that I want to be a recipient of it in an arrogant manner. I mean their servant heart melts me to the point where I want to love them back. I want them to know their value and their worth. Their servant actions actually humble me and inspire me to be more outward focused versus making life just about me.
Vs 12: Jesus says, “Whoever exalts themselves shall be humbled; and whoever humbles themselves shall be exalted.”
God help me to humble myself so that I become a great servant to those around me. Lord, thank you for those who love and encourage me. Thank you for those who affirm my gifts and abilities. May this teach me to be more of a humble servant to others and for you.
CHALLENGE: 1. Thank somebody who is an inspiration to you as a humble servant. 2. Pray God puts somebody in your path today that you could serve.
