Read Matthew 11:1-6
I’m Beginning To Doubt That Jesus Is Real!
Jesus was teaching and preaching in different cities. John the Baptist had been put in prison so he sent some of his disciples to ask Jesus, “Are you the expected one, the Messiah, or shall we look for someone else?”
What kind of question is that? And why did he ask it? John the Baptist was the one chosen by God to be the forerunner of Jesus the Messiah. He spoke of the coming Messiah. He baptized the Messiah. He saw the Holy Spirit come upon him. He declared to many people what Jesus would do on Earth.
Even after all John experienced with Jesus, he is now doubting Jesus is the Messiah? Seriously? Why now?
Perhaps because John was in prison. Perhaps, like some of us, he didn’t expect to face such trials. Maybe like us, he expected he’d be in the community always being “BLESSED” by God facing only little trials that end quickly. Yes, John probably expected some hardships, but not in prison. So now that he’s there, he probably had been praying God would release him, only to see his prayers unanswered. I’m sure discouragement came upon him to the point where he began to doubt if everything he once believed is really true. Wow! Doesn’t that sound like us?
Have you ever had a faith that seemed unstoppable, only then to go through something you didn’t “EXPECT?” Then after praying for a long time without hearing from God or not getting the answer you EXPECTED from God, you all of a sudden are questioning if Jesus is “REAL” or if God is truly a “loving God!”
Jesus responded to John’s disciples to go back and report all the miracles that Jesus was doing which confirms that he is the Messiah because of the Old Testament prophecies.
Perhaps we need reminded of the miracles Jesus has done in our lives and that the trials we face aren’t because of a God that doesn’t exist but because of a God that wants to conform us into the image of Christ. Expect trials so that when they come you and God can go through them together and become the person God wants you to be. Instead of expecting to always be “BLESSED” with no trials, only to walk away from the Lord when trials do come.
