Read Mark 9:2-8 Part 2
Just A Little Reminder
One day Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John. They went up a high mountain by themselves. All at once, Jesus was transfigured before them. His garments became radiant and exceedingly white, whiter than any white imaginable. Then Elijah and Moses appeared before them and were talking to Jesus.
What were Moses and Elijah and Jesus talking about? What was significant about this encounter on the top of this mountain? Like I said, there’s a lot about this passage I don’t understand and I can only speculate.
Moses and Elijah represent the law and the prophet of the Old Testament. Which acts as a reminder to us that the law was God’s standard for humankind, which was broken by our sin. The prophets are a reminder of the coming Messiah who will provide forgiveness of our sins and redemption for our bodies and souls.
Perhaps, Jesus in his humanity, needed a reminder from God that He was indeed The Chosen One, the Messiah. Perhaps it was a reminder that he was on the right path…
Perhaps it was also a reminder to the three disciples that Jesus is the Messiah. I mean, they already had proclaimed him as the Messiah, but when Jesus’ body and garments transfigured and radiated before them, perhaps God was revealing to the disciples more of what his Messiahship was all about. That his Kingship was more than just an earthly Kingdom – it was a Heavenly Kingdom.
Let’s assume for a second, that Jesus’s transfiguration was a reminder and revelation of what was to come. If Jesus, in his humanity, needed a reminder that he was on the right path, and that the disciples needed a reminder of the Revelation yet to come, how are we any different? How are we any better?
Don’t we all need a reminder from God that we’re on the right path? Don’t we often pray for God’s revelation of what lies ahead of us? Sure, faith and perseverance are two big words for the Christian faith, but it’s more than that. God loves us and he is always with us! He promises he will never leave us nor forsake us. There are times, in our desperation, he reveals himself to us in a way to remind us that he is still in control, or that you’re on the right path, or he gives enough of a revelation that we see his power at work. I know God wants us to seek him with all our hearts as we travel our journeys. Let me leave you with two passages as you are pursuing and seeking God daily for your life and for your future:
Jeremiah 29:11-13
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
Psalms 51:16-17
God, You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. 17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.
