Read Mark 9:14-29
I Believe! Just Help My Unbelief.
When Jesus, Peter, James, and John arrived back with the other disciples, there was a large crowd and some scribes were arguing with the disciples. When the crowd saw Jesus, they immediately ran up to Jesus to greet him. Jesus asked the crowd what they were all talking about. One man responded how his one son was possessed by an evil spirit and had been since childhood. As a result, his son was mute. It would dash him to the ground. He’d foam at the mouth, grind his teeth, stiffen out, throw him both Into the fire and into the water to destroy him.
The man complained on how the disciples were not able to cast out the evil spirit. Jesus responded by saying, “Oh unbelieving generation, how long shall I put up with you?” When they brought the boy to Jesus, the evil spirit threw the boy into a convulsion and he fell to the ground and began rolling about and foaming at the mouth. The boy’s father said to Jesus, “If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” Well that had to have been a slap onto Jesus’ face because he responded, “If you can!!! All things are possible to him who believes.” That’s a powerful statement from Jesus since everyone was looking at a boy that seemed like a hopeless situation. However, the man immediately cried out, “I do believe, help my unbelief.” Jesus then rebuked the evil spirit and commanded that it come out of the boy. After throwing the boy into a horrible convulsion, it came out so that the boy lay still as if he was dead! But the boy was healed.
The disciples privately asked Jesus why they couldn’t cast out the evil spirit and Jesus responded, “This kind can only come out by prayer.”
This lesson is for me today. A young lady from our church had been struggling with life and had turned to the Lord a couple of times only to return to a life of sin again. The third time she came to the Lord, there was a transformation. Her life had changed so much she was impacting a lot of lives for the kingdom. However she was in a broken marriage and was looking for a relationship and asked my opinion about a gentleman she wanted to pursue a relationship with. I told her not to do it but she did anyway. After doing so, she cut off relationship with me and the church. She wants nothing to do with us. To be honest with you, I could not see any way possible for her to come back to the Lord in fullness. I said to the Lord I just want to let her go and quit praying for her. This passage reminded me of the Power of Prayer and that with Jesus All Things Are possible. So Lord, forgive me because I do believe you can do a miracle in her life, and thank you for helping my unbelief.
