Read Mark 7:25-30
Come, Just As You Are.
Jesus is in Tyre, a non-Jewish region. A Syrophoenician woman, Non-Jew, came to Jesus and fell at his feet. She was pleading for Jesus to cast a demon out of her daughter. Jesus responded to her saying, “Let the children be satisfied first for it is not good to take the children’s bread and then feed it to the dogs.” In essence, Jesus was saying that you are not a Jew, one of God’s chosen people. The blessings of God are met for the Jews first.
The woman, recognizing her lowly position as a Gentile, in humility said, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children’s crumbs.” Basically, the woman said that even the smallest of God’s blessings can fall before a Gentile.
Jesus was so impressed by this woman’s faith and humility, that he told her, “The demon has gone out of your daughter.”
It was Jesus’s intention to heal the Gentile girl despite the fact she was a “lowly” Gentile. But he put it to the test to see how she would respond.
1. The woman fell at Jesus’s feet in humility. There was no arrogance or any sense of entitlement as she fell before the Lord.
2. She accepted the fact that she was not one of God’s chosen people.
3. But in humility, approached Jesus with confidence and in faith, asking for only a small portion of his Blessing for her daughter. She didn’t want the whole meal just the crumbs of what he would offer her.
Perhaps we should all approach the Lord with the same heart.
1. Go before God in humility and not arrogance. Don’t act as if we are entitled to God’s blessings.
2. Come to Jesus, Just As You Are. Bring your broken state to him and do so with the humility of the heart.
3. While maintaining humility, by faith and with confidence, present your needs to the Lord. God loves a broken and contrite heart. And when God responds, be sure to give him glory and praise.
