Read Mark 7:14-23
If Evil Is In Your Heart, Then Others Will See It.
Jesus called the multitude of people together to give a teaching on the heart of people. In verse 15, Jesus said, that nothing going into a person can defile them. But what which comes out of the person defiles them.
The disciples didn’t understand what Jesus was saying so asked for him to explain. Jesus explained that he was talking about the heart and soul of a person and not his stomach or physical body.
Physically Speaking: No matter what a person eats, it cannot defile or corrupt their heart and soul. For food goes into the stomach and not in your heart. (In saying this, Jesus was declaring that all foods were clean and would not defile them spiritually).
Spiritually Speaking: What comes out of the heart and soul of a person is what defiles and corrupts them. For whatever is in the heart and soul of a person is what determines what evil lies within them. For from the heart comes evil thoughts, such as fornication, theft, murder, adulteries, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sexuality, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these things proceed from within a defiled person.
Therefore, we should check our hearts. What you eat physically is not what makes your heart and soul evil. What you feed yourself spiritually is what will determine the condition of one’s heart.
Are you surrounding yourself with God’s word and godly people so you can stay focused on living a holy life before God? Or are you surrounding yourself with people and things of this world that strives to fulfill the inward desires of your flesh: the lusts of this world?
Beware what you feed your spirit for what lies in the heart will become evident through your thoughts and your actions. May we stand before God holy rather than corrupt and defiled.
