Read Mark 4:9-13
Are You Searching For Truth Or Not?
After Jesus tells the parable about the sower who planted seeds that fell on the four different soils, the closest followers of Jesus and the 12 disciples came and asked Jesus what the parable meant.
Remember, a parable is a story that uses real everyday life experiences which have a moral or spiritual truth that can be drawn from it. Someone once said that a parable doesn’t start with a spiritual truth but rather a parable is the doorway to the spiritual truth. Once you hear the parable you have a choice to make: do you seek to find what the parable means so it can promote spiritual growth, or, do you go on with your life resulting in no apparent growth?
The followers of Jesus and the 12 disciples came to Jesus seeking to know the spiritual truth behind the parable. He said to them, “to you it has been given the mystery of the Kingdom of God! ” In other words, if you seek truth, then I will give it to you and it can change and transform your life.
So why didn’t Jesus give the explanation of what the parable meant to everyone? It’s a dangerous thing to throw something righteous before hard hearts. Those with hard hearts are quick to trample under their feet God’s truth. The parable, in essence, separates those who are ready for truth and those who are not. Those who are ready, will seek it. Those who are not, won’t. May we all be seekers of knowing God’s truth!!!
Please, don’t let this truth escape you. To me, a very important ingredient for spiritual development is being a seeker and having a hunger for God’s truth! Don’t just be someone who listens to a sermon, or reads the Bible, yet walks away with no understanding.
Jesus quotes Isaiah 6:9-10. To me this reiterates that people with hard hearts, and not seeking truth, will result in eventually facing the wrath of God.
Take heed lest you also suffer the consequences of a hard heart.
Help me God to hear your truth, and know it in my heart, so it transforms my life, and so I look more like you and a whole lot less like me. Forgive me of my sins resulting from my hard heart!
