Read Mark 3:28-30
Have You Committed A Blasphemy Of Forgiveness Or A Blasphemy Of Unforgiveness?
As we look back in the earlier verses, the teachers of the law came to where Jesus was ministering to a crowd of people. The teachers of the law made horrible accusations against him. Jesus, out of love and compassion, was healing people and driving out demons. The teachers of the law were saying, “Jesus is possessed by Beelzebul. By the prince of demons he is driving out demons.”
To accuse Jesus of having an evil spirit is absurd. Such accusations are far from the truth. It is so much the opposite of who Jesus is. Jesus is the Son Of God. He is sinless and every act and thought he does is performed out of love and compassion. For someone to make an accusation that Jesus is filled with a demon and not the power of God, such words are blasphemous.
Jesus responds by saying, “Truly, I tell you, all sins shall be forgiven for all people, including blasphemies they utter; but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven. They are guilty of an eternal sin.”
So there are blasphemies we can commit that are forgivable; but to blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, then there is no forgiveness. What’s the difference between the two BLASPHEMIES?
Let me answer this from the perspective of my understanding of the word of God and God’s nature.
The major difference between “everyday blasphemies” and the “blasphemy of the Holy Spirit” is the desire or lack of desire to:
1. To know Jesus and
2. To repent of sins!
We all have committed blasphemies in our lives in some way or another. Those blasphemies are forgivable. If you are able to acknowledge that you are a sinner, and your heart desires to know Jesus, and repent of your sins, then you haven’t committed the Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. Listen, God’s Spirit never intended to torment anxious souls who are earnestly desiring to know Jesus. I truly believe if one is desiring Jesus and desires to repent of sin, then they have not committed the sin of unforgiveness. They may have blasphemied but not against the Holy Spirit.
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, I believe, is something that builds over time. It represents a heart that is so hardened from the truth that such a person will never desire to return to the truth. Repentance is forever from their hearts. They are forever fixated on the fact that Jesus is evil beyond evil.
Now don’t get me wrong. A person can vehemently hate Jesus, and still experience his love and forgiveness. Their heart can still be broken to know the truth. A person whose heart has blasphemied against the Holy Spirit, will never be broken again to the truth.
So if you are struggling on how you stand before the Lord, know this, if the desire to know God is present, and the desire to repent is real, then there is hope for this renewed life in Jesus that he lovingly wants with you.
