Is There A Doctor In The House?
Jesus was reclining at a house with his disciples and with a bunch of “tax-gathers and sinners.” The religious leaders, the scribes of the Pharisees, saw Jesus eating with “sinners” and complained to his disciples wondering why Jesus was eating with them?!? Overhearing them, Jesus replied, “It is not those who are healthy who need a doctor, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous but sinners.”
In essence, Jesus was letting the scribes know he was like a doctor. He was all about making sick people healed. But the sickness he was talking about was a spiritual sickness. It was the sinners who were lost and condemned to hell. He came to save them from the penalty of their sins so they could experience a new life with Christ; a new life in heaven for eternity. That’s the sole purpose Jesus came to Earth, to save sinners from their sins.
That should be our heart’s desire. We are here for a purpose. As Christians we are also called to be a physician, a doctor, to the sinners. Jesus is not going to ask us, “Why are you sitting with sinners?” He’s more apt to ask us, “Why are you not sitting with sinners?” They need a doctor, a spiritual doctor, that can point them to Christ. As Christians we need to learn to invest our lives into lost souls. To love them in such a way that they want us around. We need to learn to build relationships with lost people without compromising our faith. We should learn to love them despite their sin without accepting the sin.
Lord, I want to be your spiritual doctor to reach lost souls so they can come to know you. Help me love and build relationships without compromising my faith.
Is there a doctor in the house? May you be that doctor God uses to reach lost souls!
