Read Mark 15:16-20

I Can’t Really Imagine It!

As I read this passage I went back and reread it trying to imagine myself going through exactly what it says that Jesus went through.

1. I’m imagining a few hundred soldiers mocking me and pretending I’m a King.

2. I’m imagining them putting a purple robe on me to signify me as a king while bowing down to me in jest.

3. I’m imagining a crown of thorns being pushed down on my head. And the pain from it. I had a thorn go clean through my thumb once. It was painful. Now imagining a bunch of thorns being pushed down on my head.

4. I’m imagining being struck with a rod to my head again, and again, and again. And in the meantime, hitting the crown of thorns in the process, only adding to the pain.

5. I’m imagining being spat upon when I’ve done nothing wrong.

6. I’m imagining being whipped on my back and when all is said and done I’ve been so beaten and bruised that I’m unrecognizable.

The immense love Jesus had to have had to go through what he went through, when he didn’t have to. He took my punishment upon himself and he did nothing wrong. He could have stopped everything immediately. He could have called down angels from heaven to fight a battle against his enemies. He could have just spoken the word and everything would have come to a screeching halt. But he didn’t because he wanted to take our punishment upon himself and shed his blood for the Forgiveness of our Sins.

And the thing is, I can’t really imagine what he went through. I can try but I’ll never truly grasp the love and pain he went through for me.

If I could I would be falling down flat before Jesus in a position of humility. I would realize that that should have been me going through what he went through. If I really could understand it, then I would be in tears, broken before God. If I really could imagine it, I would want to serve this King 100% for eternity.

Dear God, I can’t imagine or understand what you went through for me, despite this fact, I give you my life 100%. I will follow you no matter what by the grace of God. Forgive me when I mock you with my sin! Amen!
