Jesus: A Mere Human Or The Son of God?
While Jesus was speaking in the temple courts, he asked the question to the people, “Why do the teachers of the law say the Messiah is the Son of David?” “When in fact, David calls him Lord, not son!”
The Old Testament prophecy says the Messiah will come from the lineage of Abraham and David. 17 verses in the New Testament refer to Jesus as the son of David. Jesus, in his humanity, fulfilled Old Testament prophecy by being from the lineage of David. You can trace his lineage back to David through both the lineage of his mother Mary and through the lineage of his adopted father, Joseph.
Romans 1:2-4, says that in Jesus’s earthly life, he was a descendant of David. However, in the Spirit, he was the Son of God. Jesus is the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy showing him to be the Messiah because of being from the lineage of David, but he’s also from his father, God.
* King David referred to the Messiah as Lord and not his son (Psalm 110:1)
* An angel of the Lord says Jesus will be called son of the most high, the son of God (Luke 1).
* The demons called Jesus the son of God in Luke 4:41 and Mark 3:11.
* John the Baptist referred to Jesus as the Son of God in John 1:34.
* The disciples called him the Son of God in Matthew 14:33 and Matthew 16:15-16.
* Jesus refers to himself as the Son of God in John 8 saying that he comes from his Father, God.
So is Jesus just a mere man or was he the Son of God? If we neglect what the scripture says and conclude that he was a mere human, he is no longer the hope for our lives but a mere role model.
To see him as the Scriptures say he is, the Messiah, the Son of God, it changes everything for us. He becomes our Savior and our means for Transformation into Holiness, into Eternal Life.
Who do you want to follow? A mere human or the Son of God? May we all see Jesus as the Son of God, the Savior of the world, and then follow him!
