Read Mark 1:21-28
There’s A New Sheriff In Town. And He Is Stirring Things Up.
Jesus has officially started his ministry. He entered into Capernaum and IMMEDIATELY on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and began to teach. It says that the people were amazed at his teachings because he taught them as one having authority, unlike the scribes.
He was different from all the other religious leaders. The people never heard anything like this before. And while in the synagogue, a man appeared with an unclean spirit who cried out to Jesus saying, “What do we have to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know Who You Are – the Holy One of God!” Jesus rebuked the evil spirit saying “Be quiet, and come out of him! ” The man went into convulsions, the unclean Spirit cried out with a loud voice, and came out of the man. It says the people were All amazed and debated among themselves what was going on. Not only was there a new teaching with authority but there was a man who commanded authority, and the evil spirits obeyed him.
It says immediately news about Jesus went out into all the surrounding district of Galilee.
There’s a new sheriff in town and things are going to be different from here on out. Or should we say, there’s a new religious leader in town and things are going to be different from here on out. Jesus was not like the other religious leaders. I’m sure the religious leaders had developed a routine of life that eventually was not captivating people’s hearts. But when Jesus comes into the picture, people’s hearts are captivated.
Sometimes I feel like Christians get caught up in their everyday routines, and after a while the world around them drowns out the Holy Spirit in their lives. They no longer captivate the hearts of those around them. But then, God sends a new believer in their midst and begins to stir things up. His Holy Spirit begins to be displayed in a new way. Lives are being changed again.
What could be said about our lives? When people see us do they say there’s a new Christian in town and things are going to be different from here on out?
Are people captivated with our love? Are they captivated with the joy they see in our lives? Do we speak with authority? Do we display a confidence that has never been seen before? Do they see a transformation like they’ve never seen before? Do they find themselves awestruck at the newness of Our lives, even finding themselves wanting what they see, or at least asking questions about it. Or as Christians, do we fit in just like the other people around us? There’s nothing unique about us?
Know Who You Are in Christ! Operate under his authority. Be confident! Don’t get caught up in the mundane life of this world. Be captivated by the Holy Spirit so that others are captivated as well.
