Read Luke 8:19-21
Who’s Your Daddy?
Jesus is speaking to a large crowd inside someone’s home. His mother and brothers come to see Jesus but couldn’t get near him because of all the people. They asked that a message be conveyed to Jesus, that, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside wanting to see you.”
Jesus replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”
This passage destroys the idea that everyone is God’s child, that we are all a part of the family of God. No we aren’t! God wishes we all were, but there are two fathers: the devil or Jesus. Whose family do you belong to? In John 8:44, Jesus accused the Pharisees and religious leaders of having the devil as their father. He said, “You are of your father the devil, and your will is to do your father’s desires.” I suggest you read the whole chapter. It’s captivating.
Jesus makes it clear that we can only become a part of the family of God if we hear his word and put it into practice. There are two world leaders pulling on our hearts: the devil and the Lord God. The one we are listening to and obey is the one we call our Father. This is not a game! This is a matter of life or death for eternity.
Living for worldly pleasures means you make yourself apart of the family of the devil. You practice sins of the flesh and surround yourself with people who do the same. Living for the Lord is to live according to the spirit’s desires. Be obedient go to the Lord and you become a part of the family of God.
Galatians 5 gives examples of the acts of the flesh and the acts of the spirit. It’s scary for those who do the acts of the flesh because it says you “will not inherit the kingdom of God.” But those who are living by the spirit have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires (Galatians 5:19-25).
The family you belong to is not determined by your words, it’s determined by your actions. Who’s Your Daddy?
