Read Luke 6:41-42

I Think I Got Something In My Eye!

Jesus asked this question, “Why do you look at the spec in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?”

There’s often a difference between what is truth and what we perceive to be true. Why is that? God’s word IS TRUTH so why is it that there’s a difference between how God is calling us to live versus how we are actually living? What is it that blocks us from this truth resulting in us looking like hypocrites? What’s worse, we are easily able to see the spec in other’s eyes, causing them to be blind to God’s Truth, while all the while, we have a huge plank in our own eyes resulting in us being TOTALLY blind to the truth and living like hypocrites. On top of that, we judge our friend on how they are living as if we’re perfect. We even confront them as if we are better than them.

Jesus says, “How can you say to your friend, ‘Let we get the spec out of your eye’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

The Pharisees were great at looking down on others and were more blind than those they were confronting.

What is it in this world that has captivated our hearts and captured our attention so much that we have lost focus of what God is wanting from us? Perhaps we should pay more attention to how we are living out our faith before we get too excited about judging others on their faith practice.

Also, when we deal with our problems first, it gives us a whole new appreciation for how hard it is to change so that we are more compassionate and merciful to our brothers and sisters with their struggles.

God, forgive me when I lose focus of your truth and when I justify my actions. Help me see clearly of what your truth is so I can be transformed into the person you want me to be, so I can be more compassionate and merciful in encouraging others to do the same. In Jesus name, amen!
