Read Luke 6:17-26 – Part 1
Where Do You Find Your Satisfaction? In The Things Of God Or The Things Of This World?
Crowds of people gathered around Jesus to hear him speak and to be healed. Many miracles occurred.
Afterwards, Jesus looked at his disciples and gave words of blessings on where our hearts should be, and he gave words of woes meaning strong warnings of where our hearts shouldn’t be.
Jesus said:
1. “Blessed are the poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.” “But woe to the rich….”
2. “Blessed are those who hunger now for you will be satisfied.” “But woe to those who are well fed now for you will go hungry.”
3. “Blessed are those who weep now for you will laugh.” “But woe to those who laugh now for later you will mourn and weep.”
4. Blessed are those when people hate you, exclude you, insult you, and reject you, because of your faith in Jesus. Rejoice and leap for Joy for great is your reward in heaven. But woe to those who are seeking favor and popularity with the world versus from God. Their outcome will be devastating for eternity.
All 4 of these blessings and woes are distinct opposites.
BLESSINGS: Those who will receive the blessings are those who are humble, and recognize that the things of this world aren’t what gives us value and true happiness. They hunger for the things of God and his Word! They weep over the Lost, those in pain and full of sorrow. They stay focused on God and no persecution sways their heart from God.
WOES: However, those receiving the harsh warnings are those who are living for the pleasures of this world. They have lost focus of God because they were busy feeding their selfish desires, and have lost focus not just of God but of those in need around them. They seek to please people versus being obedient to the Lord.
