Read Luke 24:13-35
Well I’ll Be! Jesus Is Alive!
Two followers of Jesus were traveling together to a village called Emmaus. They were downcast with all that had happened to Jesus. They thought he was the Messiah that would redeem Israel from Roman rule, not realizing he was redeeming all of the world from Satan’s rule. As they were walking, Jesus came alongside them wondering what they were talking about. They were kept from recognizing him.
They replied to Jesus their dismay that the Messiah was killed, yet stated the women said he was alive. They didn’t know what to believe. Jesus told them they were foolish for not believing all that the prophets said about the Messiah! So Jesus started with Moses and all of the prophets on what was said concerning himself.
As they entered Emmaus, the two men encouraged Jesus to stay with them because it was getting late. So Jesus sat with them and broke bread and at once they recognized Jesus, but Jesus at once disappeared from their sight. As a result, at once the two returned to Jerusalem and told the 11 disciples that they had seen Jesus and He IS Alive.
Two men traveling to Emmaus didn’t know whether to believe Jesus was alive or not. They were downcast. Even with Jesus in their midst, they didn’t recognize him until he broke bread with them.
Are you downcast today? Do you feel that Jesus is not alive because the redemption you are waiting for has not happened? Don’t be foolish! Let the reading of the Scriptures remind you that Jesus is actually walking with you through your circumstances. He is alive! He is not dead! He is at work in and through your circumstances. At once, then, believe his redemption is forthcoming and it may not happen exactly how you anticipate it. But the redemption Jesus is bringing will be good news. News that is worthy of sharing with others. May we at once tell others what Jesus is doing in our lives versus walking around downcast as if Jesus is Dead!
