Read Luke 22:14-20
There’s A New Sheriff In Town!
After the necessary preparations had been made for the Passover meal, Jesus and his disciples sat together at the table. Jesus said to them:
1. “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.” Why did he say that? Perhaps because the significance of the meal is life-changing. Jesus is about to be the sacrificial lamb who will bring Salvation to the world.
2. “For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the Kingdom of God.” Before Jesus, it was necessary to sacrifice a lamb for the forgiveness of sins. But Jesus’s death and Resurrection is the introduction to a new sheriff in town. A new Authority that will be recognized in the New Kingdom that awaits us. Jesus’ Death and Resurrection will be recognized in his coming Kingdom as the one and only means for forgiveness and salvation.
3. Verses 17 through 20, Jesus performs communion that takes focus off of the traditional Passover meal and transforms it into a new ritual. The new ritual is to be performed by his followers in remembrance of Jesus and his sacrifice. This will replace the old ritual of the Passover lamb. It marks the end of the old covenant and the beginning of a new covenant.
Dear Lord, thank you that you eagerly desire to eat with me. Thank you for making it all about a relationship and not a law that I can’t fulfill. Help me desire to sit with you daily. And help me to always remember what you did for me through your sacrifice, and not just remember it once a month at church during communion.
