Read Luke 1:46-56
Which Attracts God? Pride or Humility?
Mary, the mother of the coming Jesus, after hearing what the Holy Spirit said through Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist, was so overwhelmed with joy that she broke out in a song. The words that she said are common phrases found throughout the book of Psalms. It gives the impression that she had an understanding of the Scriptures. May reading God’s word be a daily practice for us in our spiritual walk.
I’m going to write the whole song of Mary and just capitalize certain words or phrases that stand out to me as they relate to HUMILITY and PRIDE.
Mary said:
“My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been MINDFUL OF THE HUMBLE state of his SERVANT. From now on all generations will call me BLESSED, for the Mighty One has done great things for me – holy is his name. His MERCY EXTENDS TO THOSE WHO FEAR HIM from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; HE HAS SCATTERED THOSE WHO ARE PROUD in their inmost thoughts. HE HAS BROUGHT DOWN RULERS from their throne but HAS LIFTED UP THE HUMBLE. He has FILLED THE HUNGRY with good things but has SENT THE RICH AWAY EMPTY. He has HELPED HIS SERVANT Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”
Mary had a very good understanding that God is drawn to the humble but is against those who are prideful.
Lord help me not be deceived in my thinking. Reveal any prideful way within me so that I may be a humble servant before you! Amen.
