Read Luke 13:1-5
Learn To Hate Sin.
Two things happen that Jesus addressed.
1. Galilean Jews were brutally killed by Pilate who then took their blood and mixed it with their animal sacrifices.
2. A tower in Siloam fell on 18 people and killed them.
Jesus asked these questions: Did these people die because they were worse sinners? Did they perish because they were more guilty of sin? Jesus answers his own questions by saying, “No!” Then he added these words, “Unless you repent of your sins you too will perish.”
To points I’d like to make from this passage:
1. Sadly, evil things will happen to us and our loved ones that we will hate but it’s because of the curse of sin that it happens. People will do wicked things to others plus misfortunate accidents will happen in our everyday lives. A tree fell on my school friend and killed him immediately. People die in car accidents or by murders. It’s all a part of the curse of sin. Jesus challenged the thought process that says, “I must be a bad person because bad things are happening to me.” “God’s not answering my prayers the way I want him to, so I must have sin in my life.” Our minds are prone to think the worst rather than learn from it. Or learn to lean on God’s comfort through it.
2. People suffer in ways we just can’t imagine. Jesus wanted the people to see the suffering and hate it because he wanted them to learn that unless we repent of our sins, we too will suffer something even more horrific – the suffering of being in hell for eternity. Jesus wants us to learn to hate sin and repent from it.
Jesus, help us learn to despise sin in our lives. Then give us a desire to repent of the sin versus suffering the consequences of living in our sin.
