Which Father’s Desires Are Your Desires?
As Jesus was speaking, the Jews continued to put their eternal security in the fact that they were Jews and Abraham was their father. Yes, God gave Abraham a promise to make Abraham into a great nation (Israel-God’s chosen people). However, he also made a promise that through his offspring all families on Earth would be blessed, a promise realized through Jesus Christ.
God’s promise never stated that salvation came ultimately because of one’s association with Abraham, but rather because of one’s association with the promised one, Jesus. To put one’s eternal security into anything other than Jesus is to be lost and separated from God forever, doomed for Hell.
When it comes to Salvation, what are you putting your security in? I pray that we are putting it in the hope of Jesus and not in the fact that we are “good people.”
The Jews claimed that Abraham and God was their Father. Jesus exposed their True heart that the devil was actually their father because they strived to do the desires of the devil rather than of Abraham or God. They hated and wanted to kill Jesus.
Where is my heart today? What is going on in my life today? What obstacles are you facing? What relationships are you struggling with? How are you pursuing these obstacles and relationships? Are you striving to overcome them by pursuing the desires of the devil? That means with hate, with thoughts of murder? Selfishness? Revenge? Gossip? Abuse? Or are you attacking your problems with God’s desires? With love and forgiveness. Have you left out the love Factor?
God help me to keep you in my heart and not allow the devil to get a foothold and deceive me into pursuing his desires over the desires of God. In Jesus name, amen.
