Read John 2:1-12
A Person Of Confidence And Authority.
A wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus and his mother, along with his disciples, were invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’s mother told Jesus there was no more wine. She told him this, not just to make him aware but, so that he would do something about it. It was as if she knew Jesus calling was to do miracles. Jesus replied, “Why do you involve me in this matter. My time [for miracles] has not yet come.” Yet, Mary was persistent and took it upon herself to say to the servants, “Do whatever Jesus tells you.” Jesus’s miracles begin as he turns large containers of water into fine wine. The master of the banquet was amazed how great the wine tasted. When the disciples saw what Jesus did, they believed in him.
I usually pictured Mary as being a quiet humble lady. In this passage, I see her as a woman who is aware of her surroundings and of insight, not afraid to voice her opinion. I see her as a strong woman. Not overbearing but willing to voice her opinion. She talked to Jesus with authority, not with arrogance but with confidence because she was connected to the Lord. Mary knew it was time for Jesus to begin his ministry, so she took charge and let him know it was time.
I feel like certain times in our lives, God will speak to us through someone who has insight on what is our next step in life. They speak with confidence and authority and when you hear their words you know it’s from God. You might fight it at first, but you realize they speak words of truth. God often uses my wife, along with friends and sometimes people I don’t even know.
God, this is my prayer: “Please give me the insight and awareness that Mary had so that I might speak with confidence, and with your authority, words of life into others and encourage them for your calling on their lives. Help me inspire others to be the best they can be with the gifts that you have given them. In Jesus name, amen.
