Today is Part 2 of what the Greek word παράκλητος (paraklētos) means. In different versions of the Bible it is translated as “Advocate,” “Helper,” “Comforter,” or “Counselor.”
If you look at history, a Legal Advocate In ancient Greek culture, a paraklētos, was often a legal assistant or a spokesperson who stood by a person in court to provide testimony or legal counsel.
Jesus is our legal advocate.
As followers of Christ we stand before a judge who typically would say that we are condemned to hell. But because Jesus is our advocate, he stands on our behalf testifying that he took our punishment upon himself. Every sin we ever committed he put upon himself and was punished for it so that we wouldn’t have to be. So we stand before the judge set free. When God looks at us, He no longer sees Blair the sinner, but he sees the righteousness of Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:21 “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (ESV).
We are no longer in bondage. We are no longer bound by sin. We have been set free. Now we are to live our freedom in Christ in righteousness and holiness.1 Peter 2:24 “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed”.
Romans 6:6-7 (NLT) “We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.”
