What Can’t You Live Without: Earthly Things Or Jesus?
The disciples were concerned with Jesus talking about going somewhere and they can’t come. So he gives words of comfort to them and says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I’m going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you may be where I am. You know the way to the place I am going.”
The disciples didn’t quite understand what Jesus was talking about and were troubled within. So Jesus gave hope that even though he can’t be seen he’s preparing a place for each of his followers in heaven. It’ll be beautiful and perfect.
Did you ever have a time when you start to question God like the disciples did? “Hey God, where are you? You said you’d never leave us, why don’t I see or feel you?” Maybe you’re going through something that seems unfair: a broken relationship, a death of a loved one, got fired from your job, can’t pay a bill, or a form of Injustice. There are all kinds of evil that come against us, but God is at work. I’ve seen and experienced situations that seem to bring no relief. Sometimes it’s because of my own foolishness and poor decisions, and sometimes because God is wanting me to trust him even in the middle of the storm.
Sometimes I want something and feel it is really important to have but it doesn’t come. And I have to ask myself, do I want this more than I want my relationship with Jesus. Am I willing to suffer without something while hanging on to my faith in Christ?
If I had a bad heart and I’m waiting for a donor so my life can be saved, but it’s not available, will I find contentment in my faith alone? Would I accept the fact that I will die without a donor and be content to be with my God in Heaven for eternity. Is Jesus the most important person in your life that you are content to go without something on Earth because you find contentment in knowing you’ll be with Jesus forever?
