Read John 1:39-42
Two Observations: Your Time. Your Name.
Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the disciples of John who left John to follow Jesus. After being with Jesus for just a few hours, Andrew immediately found his brother Simon and told him, “We have found the Messiah!” He took Simon to Jesus. Jesus looked at Simon and said, “You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas.” In Aramaic it means “Rock.” The Greek word for ROCK is Peter.
Two Observations:
1. It didn’t take Andrew long to find out that Jesus was the Messiah. He heard he was, but after experiencing a few hours with him, Andrew was convinced enough that he had to get his brother Simon. How much time do we spend with Jesus every day and throughout the day? How convinced are we that Jesus is the Messiah? Who is the most recent person you were compelled, with excitement, to share Jesus with? Think about that!
2. Jesus saw something in Simon and knew he had a gift or quality to be solid as a ROCK for Jesus. What quality does Jesus see in me? What name would he give me as a picture of my strength that would be beneficial for the Kingdom of God?
I was in Dollar General the other day and was waiting in line for the cashier. This young lady, who was working at the counter, had an enormous gift of connecting with the customers that I couldn’t help but think, this lady is impacting a lot of lives at work. I also thought how I would love to have her on a Ministry Team because I know she would have the ability to connect with people and have the ability to communicate the love of Christ. I could see Jesus calling her Phileo, which means “sharing fondness, affection, friendship, or the ability to build relationships.” Jesus would probably give her the name Phila or Amy because both refer to that type of quality of love that this young lady displayed!
Jesus, help me spend time with you. Help me share you with others, and help me to know my name as you see my gifts and qualities. Amen!
