Read John 11:17-37
We All Face Death But We Don’t All Have To Die.
Jesus and his disciples came to see Lazarus who was sick. Their journey took a number of days to get there. When they arrived, Lazarus had already been dead for 4 days and was wrapped and put in a tomb. But this was Jesus’s plan. Many Jews from Jerusalem had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in their home. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed home. When Martha saw Jesus, she said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” Later, when Mary came to see Jesus, Mary also said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”
Something that Jesus said to comfort Martha, I think it’s valuable for us today. He said, “Your brother will rise again.” Jesus had said, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live [eternally], even though they die [physically]; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die [spiritually]. Do you believe this?”
Mary and the comforting Jews were all weeping. Jesus was deeply moved and wept also. The people could see this love that Jesus had for Lazarus. Some of the Jews even said why didn’t Jesus keep Lazarus from dying?
Death is a natural phenomenon. We all will face death. Sadly, we hate to see our loved ones die especially if it is a tragic death. As Jesus said, those who are in Christ have a hope beyond death on Earth. It’s called eternal life in heaven with God and all the other Christians. But it’s a choice. If you choose Christ, the hope is eternal life in heaven. But if you choose a life without Jesus, then there’s no hope for your soul except to be separated from God in a place called hell for eternity.
