Why Are They So Blind?
The Jews are still questioning Jesus wanting to know if he is claiming to be the Messiah. They’re looking for reasons to kill him. Jesus makes these claims. He said he is the Good Shepherd. He gives eternal life. His sheep will never perish. No one will be able to snatch them out of his hand. He said, “I and the Father [God] are One.” This triggered the Jews because they saw Jesus as a mere man and not God so they picked up stones to stone Jesus. Jesus said that the Father is in me and I am in the Father. This also triggered the Jews so they tried to seize him but Jesus escaped.
Why are the Jews so blind to the truth? Jesus did so many miracles and fulfilled so many Old Testament prophecies, yet they continue to ignore the facts.
What does spiritual blindness do to a person?
1. They always question God. Questioning God can be a very healthy thing if your heart is sincere to find the truth. But these blind men questioned God, not because they wanted truth, but because they wanted an excuse to kill him.
2. They ignore the facts. Jesus was fulfilling Scripture of what the Son of Man / Son of God would do, but they ignored the facts because their hatredness overpowered facts and truth.
3. They don’t promote truth. Even today we see people who “know God.” But they don’t promote a relationship with Jesus with their family, or friends, or any loved ones. When they are with their peers, they don’t talk about things of faith because it’s not a true conviction within their heart. The things of this world captivate their heart more than the word of God does.
4. Sadly they aren’t true followers of Christ. To be a follower of Christ is to live as he did and capture the vision of sharing Jesus with others.
5. And this is even more sad: their destination is separation from God forever in hell. Jesus said, anyone who is unwilling to take up their cross and follow me daily, they cannot be one of my disciples.
Lord, remove any blindness so that I may see the whole truth and live it.
