Read Daniel Chapter 5
Couldn’t You Read The Handwriting On The Wall?
After King Nebuchadnezzar died, his son Belshazzar took over as king over Babylon. He was arrogant like his father had been. He remembered his dad being humbled by God and knew what he himself was doing was wrong. But he continued to live his life of arrogance and with immediate gratifications.
One night during a huge party, King Belshazzar took the cups that his dad took from the temple of God in Jerusalem and began to celebrate with everyone with the drinking of wine in the cups and praising their false gods.
As a result, God sent a hand to write an inscription upon the wall. King Belshazzar was full of fear and called all his wise men to interpret the inscription on the wall. The king said if anyone could interpret the inscription they would receive rewards and also become third in command over the kingdom. But no one could interpret it. But a woman told the king of Daniel and how he interpreted dreams and visions for his father. So Daniel was called in and was told of the rewards he would receive and how he would become third in command over the kingdom. Daniel responded by saying, your father had me interpret his dreams and vision and God needed to humble him because of his arrogance. Daniel confronted this King saying he was arrogant and knew he was and knew it was wrong but still chose to do as he pleased. Daniel interprets the writing saying, “God has numbered your kingdom and put an end to it. You have been found deficient before the Lord. As a result, your kingdom will be divided amongst the Medes and the Persians. After he gave the interpretation, the king gave Daniel the rewards and made him third in command over the kingdom. However, that night the King was slain and killed.
There’s an old saying, “Couldn’t you read the handwriting on the wall?” In other words, you knew what you were doing was wrong but you kept doing it.
That’s why Daniel confronted King Belshazzar. But we can be just as stubborn. The self-gratifications of Life are nice, they really are, but they’re often evil and result in bad consequences. Once we start down a path that God says “No” to, he will give us his handwriting on the wall of our hearts. We immediately get to choose to listen to his Spirit or give into the temptation. If we keep giving into the temptations, then nothing good will come from it. But if King Belshazzar would have repented that night, he could have saved his life and his soul. But he didn’t. Let today be a new day with Jesus. Give him all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. Let him turn you into the man and woman of God that he has called you to be. You’re Beautiful and Awesome!!!
