Part 2 – I’m Such A Holy Person!
I know we read this passage yesterday but there’s so much in this that I feel compelled to talk about more this week.
I mentioned yesterday that the teachers of the law and Pharisees brought the woman, who was caught in adultery, before Jesus. However, the law of Moses says in Leviticus 20:10 that both the male and female are to be stoned to death. As Christians we are called to be holy because it is extremely important before God. So where was the man caught in adultery? Why didn’t the religious leaders bring both the man and woman to Jesus?
May I suggest that it was because they didn’t care. Their motive was not because they were passionate about promoting the Holiness of God. They had a different motive and that was to see Jesus killed. They gave the impression that Holiness was important, but because they were actually driven by the hatredness within them, they were willing to “use a woman” to accomplish their hate driven motive. They weren’t concerned at all about fulfilling the law of Moses. If that was the case they would have had both the man and woman.
How ironic: they give the impression that Holiness is important but their end goal is unholy because they want Jesus dead.
It’s amazing what the heart will do when the foundation principle is not holiness but is actually hate, selfishness, or arrogance. We speak like we’re godly. We quote scripture like we’re holy. We talk about others as if they are the real problem, but the real problem is our heart. The real problem is our motives (hate driven), our selfishness (I want to look good while making the other person look evil), our arrogance (we hide behind the Bible and portray ourselves as a holy person when in fact we need to come before God in brokenness and humility confessing our sin and doing something about our sin before God).
Lord help us all to check our motives. If there is any hate, selfishness, or arrogance, then help us do whatever possible to get rid of it rather than hide it.
