Read Acts 2:29-41. Are You One Of Them?
Peter is still speaking to the crowds of Jews at Pentecost. He speaks with confidence that David died and was buried, and his tomb that holds his body is still seen. But David, though he was a king, was not the one God prophesied about as the coming King, the Messiah. In fact, David prophesied of the resurrection of Jesus twice.
1. The one I mentioned yesterday that the Messiah’s body would not decay (Psalms 16:8-11), and today,
2. Psalms 110:1, when David said, “The Lord said to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.'”
“The Lord [God] said to my Lord [David’s Lord – meaning Jesus], ‘Sit at my right hand [the position of supreme honor, power and authority, and would rule with God] until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet’ [a waiting period of time while God subdues all enemies under Jesus’s Authority – ensuring final victory].”
Peter then says, “Therefore, let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”
In other words, he wanted to make sure they knew that David was not the Messiah. And his grave gives evidence of that. But it was in fact Jesus who he was talking about, whom they crucified. And when the people heard this, “They were cut to the throat and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?'”
This is a great question! I wish everyone I shared Jesus with asked that question: “What shall I do!”
Peter gives the answer:
“Repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.”
1. Repent of your sins: meaning to stop the old way of life and turn to Christ as a commitment to walk in Holiness with him.
2. Be baptized: which is a great testimony to you and others of your commitment to walk in repentance.
In doing this, Peter said, “You will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” This is a promise for all who repent and turn to Jesus. And the number of people who accepted and responded to this message was around 3,000 people. Are you one of them?
