Psalms Chapter 97
How Could Anyone Serve A False god?
The chapter starts with, “The Lord reigns. Let the Earth be glad and the distant shores rejoice.”
The psalmist compares the God of the universe with man-made gods. There is no comparison. God of the universe shows his power and might through his creation.
1. On a stormy day we see dark thick clouds cover the Earth and lightning strikes and lights up the world. People see and tremble.
2. Fire goes before the Lord and is ever consuming. People flee from it in fear.
3. Mountains melt before the Lord. Rushing waters cut out mountains and leave the trace of its power.
These are just examples the psalmist gives of God’s Mighty power. Now compare that to man-made images. What can they do? Nothing! Yet these gods were worshiped over the Lord God. How could anyone do that?
Today, God is still powerful and still full of love, righteousness, and justice. We get to choose who we will serve. Let me quote Joshua who said, “As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord! ” But wait a minute, do I? Yes, you can find evidence of that. But do I get sidetracked? Yes, I do. I would like to boast and say I don’t, but I do. We can’t see how people could bring themselves to worship a man made image but in our world today we worship all kinds of things over God. It’s a slow process, but Satan uses whatever tools necessary to distract our attention from the Lord God and on to other things or people such as sports or someone we think is amazing, or hobbies, etc.
So how’s your daily walk with the Lord? What or who has captivated your heart? Is it the Lord God or a god?
