Psalms Chapter 79
Stay Off The Slippery Slope.
The psalmist is appalled by how God’s Temple has been defiled by their enemy. He’s appalled how they have treated God’s people. But God’s people had turned their hearts away from the Lord and now they have faced God’s wrath. The psalmist prays for God’s mercy and asks for forgiveness of sins. He says God if you deliver us we will praise you forever.
It’s amazingly sad! How could God’s people in Jerusalem go from serving the living God to all of a sudden no longer walking with him? Actually, it doesn’t just happen. It’s a slow process. I’ve done it. I feel experienced in this area. I’ve let my attention get in other areas and then I’m really good at justifying it by saying I’m not as bad as someone else or I have good intentions. In the meantime, I find myself on a slippery slope in need of God’s intervention. When God speaks to my heart I need to respond by acknowledging my sin and repenting from it, NOW. If I don’t, then I quickly can become like the people of Jerusalem heading down a fast and slippery slope. At some point, God’s love for me will be displayed through a humbling process. This is when God brings my sin to the surface and I’ll find myself falling before God crying for his help and telling him that if it gets me through this I’ll praise him forever.
God, forgive me of my sins and keep me off the slippery slope. Help me stay focused on you in all areas of my life! I love you Lord!
