Psalms Chapter 73
Stop Envying What Others Have!
The psalmist starts by saying that God is good to the pure in heart. Yet, he confesses how he lost focus when he saw how the arrogant and wicked seemed to prosper in life. He envied what they had.
It wasn’t until he went before the Lord that he realized this Earth is a temporary place and the arrogant and wicked will face a horrible destiny. “They will perish.”
The psalmist acknowledges that his greatest gift is the Lord and how God is always with him. He said God holds us in his right hand. He guides and counsels us. There’s no one he admires more than the Lord.
How about us? Do we envy and get jealous of what a family member or friend has? Do we ever get on Facebook and see wonderful vacations someone goes on. We envy them because we can’t afford a vacation. Or we see how they have a four-wheeler, a snowmobile, a nice home with a three-car garage and we struggle to buy groceries. We envy them.
Stop for a second. Yes, it’s nice to have nice things. I’d be a liar if I said I didn’t. But we can’t lose focus on what’s most important: it’s our growing relationship with Christ. There’s no vacation, no vehicle, no house, no toy, no other relationship that compares to the awesomeness of Jesus Christ. All this stuff on Earth will one day end, but our relationship with Christ will last forever. All the joys of life will not even come close to compare with the eternal joys that awaits those who are in Christ. Don’t lose focus. Stop envying what others have.
I can’t help but think that if people saw how real our love relationship was with the Lord, they’d envy us because of what we have versus being content with all the stuff they have. Think about that!
