Psalms Chapter 38

Pain and Guilt

The psalmist is in great pain and cries out to God. He says to God don’t rebuke me in your anger despite my sin. Your wrath has broken me and the guilt I carry is too heavy to bear. I am humble before you. I’m emptied of strength. My pain is great. My enemies attack me. Therefore, I confess my sins to you. Come quickly and save me from all this pain and guilt.

Have you ever felt that way? Here are some things I’ve learned over the years.

1. God’s discipline is a positive thing even though I don’t like it. His discipline is often not something he quickly brings upon us. He often gives us warning signs to get us to repent of sin but if we don’t listen, over and over again, his discipline comes. It often breaks me, or embarrasses me, it always humbles me, and eventually brings me back to God in brokenness and holiness. Which is where I need to be.

2. God’s discipline is not to destroy us “because we are evil.” It’s purpose is to restore us into a right and loving relationship with God. If we aren’t listening, then get ready for God’s loving discipline. We need to learn to respond to God’s call for repentance right from the beginning.

CHALLENGE: Is God speaking to you to repent? Heed his call. If you’re carrying guilt with you, confess the sin to the Lord and because of his great love, he will forgive you and forget. There will be no more condemnation. You’re set free! Smile and rejoice! Get ready for God’s new adventure. Don’t let Satan wallow you in your past hurts, pain, and guilt, but remind him of your freedom in Christ. YOU’RE FREE!!!
